When Do Teeth Need to Be Removed?
While we do whatever we can to restore teeth with fillings and crowns, if a tooth is too damaged to be saved, we’ll need to extract it. Teeth are typically extracted when a severe amount of decay has damaged the internal portions of the tooth (pulp) so much that it cannot function on its own.
We may also need to remove teeth if a serious injury knocks it out of its socket, and it cannot survive, even if reimplanted. In other cases, severe infection, periodontal (gum) disease, or the eruption of wisdom teeth may necessitate an extraction.
Removing the Tooth
If the patient’s exam and X-rays confirm the need for an extraction, our team will prepare everything to ensure the procedure is as smooth and pain-free as possible. The dentist will give the proper anesthesia for the type of extraction being performed. This may be a local or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the case.
After the extraction, the blood should begin normal clotting and start the healing process. The empty socket is packed with gauze to assist with the patient’s healing. Our team will remain available to answer any questions or concerns you may have about the process.
Healing at Home
Some patients experience tenderness in the area after an extraction. Over-the-counter pain medications may help relieve these symptoms. In more severe cases, the dentist will prescribe additional medication to assist in the healing process. Ice packs may be used to reduce any swelling.
Patients should follow normal oral hygiene procedures. Change the gauze pads frequently and rinse with warm, salt water the next day to keep the area clean. Our team also recommends eating soft, cold foods for a few days after the extraction.
When patients follow their after-care instructions properly, they should heal with few, if any, issues. Giving our bodies the necessary time to complete the healing processes ensures the best outcome.
